Digito-Physical: The New Global Normal

The scale of Corona has reversed modern living from “Inside Out to Outside In". The basic philosophy of Socialization which was based on friendship, mutual understanding, cooperation and trust, physical trimming for accomplishing the work has been reversed through a hygiene dictum of Social Distancing. The fallout of this has been a skewness of society towards extreme self-concern, self-love of individuals across the Globe. Society has been mentally fragmented with the spell of separatism from each other. A huge impact of mutual mistrust, doubt, and insecurity have loomed across the minds of individuals. It is in this context, all forms of print, digital, social, and other modes of communication have been echoing the view of grave despair and the gloomy condition of the world ahead. Though this view has been drawn from the immediate past and current run of days, it requires a serious review to project the most optimum picture of the future of the world ahead.

There have been fundamental transformations in the mode of teaching and its pedagogy. At EIILM-Kolkata the teaching and pedagogy have been adopted in the following ways:
1. Teachers have adopted efficient and conversant digital technology to reach out to all the students across the curriculum, University+ activities, interactive workshops, and reversible presentations between the teachers and students as an ongoing process towards delivering knowledge and transferable practices to the relevant students.
2. The Institute has continuously gone for web-seminars (WEBINARs) on a domestic and global scale involving Professors from the United States of America, The European Region, the Asian Region, and different parts of India. Also involving top / senior most functionaries of global scale corporations and multinational corporations, most of which operate from more than three continents of the world.
3. Teaching pedagogy has been redesigned in such a way for each focused concept the teacher offers hands-on workshop and reverse presentation by the students.
4. Each class generates a blind feedback system to support the teacher and student to have better and cohesive learning in the next session.

Global Learning Movement in Digital Era, initiated by EIILM-Kolkata: Swadhyah Samkalpa (A Promise to Self Study) very widely covered across functional areas of practice and learning wherein Heads of Multinational Corporations, International Brands, and National Level Organizations, operating from multi-location regions of India, having a business focus on widely diversified product and service categories, took an active part in the entire process. The Swadhyah Samkalpa became an efficient interactive forum where the students of the Human Resources discipline, Finance discipline, Marketing discipline, and mixed areas have the opportunity to make theme-based or creatively identified strategic focus on products and services offered by large brands and companies operating in India and Globally. The presentations were participated, witnessed, evaluated, and responded squarely back by the leading top / senior functionaries from those relevant functional areas of practice in India and abroad. Swadhyah Samkalpa has become a learning movement, which is new of its kind in not only India but in the global context. EIILM-Kolkata has created a new pathway for learning in the post-modern and digital era in India and in the global context.

EIILM-Kolkata Research Centre: A Unique Research Centre has been created at EIILM-Kolkata under Vidyasagar University, Govt. of West Bengal, to facilitate research in the area of Management and allied discipline of learning and practices. The Research has got two aspects:
# Corporate and Business Research towards developing, redefining, restructuring, redesigning, and re-engineering corporate processes and practices towards the fulfillment of the stakeholders’ expectations and objectives in general and societal and government imperatives in particular.
# This Centre has started the process of offering a Ph.D. in Management and allied areas for the academics and professionals who would participate through the coursework and fulfill the requirements of research in general.

It is also a matter of fact that the Institute has commenced the process of Final Placement for the senior students who are now at the 4th Semester and shall be graduating in the month of August/September 2021 and close to 50% of the students are already in the pipeline of getting their posting and placement. The remaining process is ON. The Institute is very determined and hopeful of completing the process before the curriculum and examination for the curriculum ends up at the appropriate time.

The EIILM-Kolkata Research Centre has initiated the process to orient and support academics with relevant thoughts and ideas derived from practices and apply the same in the learning context.

Physical interaction with people and place of the industry is happening in a restricted manner based on the norms and standards as advised by the Government, however, the institution has gone for a series of the international and national webinar, leadership talks wherein the students at large, members of faculty, former students, invitees from outside, industry professionals and general public have participated in. In the current pandemic backdrop, the Global Web Seminar on “Global Economy: Post Corona Opportunities and Prospects” has been organized on 11th July 2020 with the focus of America, Europe, and India with the speakers, the most futuristic and competent. The post-Corona world will have settled a New World based on the contents of Human Capital, Financial Capital, Material Capital, and Resources at disposal. Eminent speakers were Prof. (Dr.) Bruce K Behn, Haslam College of Business, University of Tennessee-USA, Prof. (Dr.) Peter P Muller, International GmbH, MD-GMBP from Germany, and myself Prof. (Dr.) R P Banerjee Chairman & Director, EIILM-Kolkata, formerly of IIM-Calcutta. The institute has gone in the length and breadth of the academic and professional interface to benefit primarily the students and other members of the industry and academia in general.

In the prevailing situation, the mindset of students studying professional courses should be reoriented towards a higher degree of adaptability, greater frequency of being in touch with the mentors and the learning system, higher degree of commitment towards academics and inputs.

The dormant potentials of people, particularly the students and youth of the world would require a strong stimulus to rejuvenate the individual’s emotional intelligence. At the level of the collective, this, along with sharpening of skills through technology and focusing the same across regional and global strategies will surely position world society on an elevated and superior platform.

The new era of the economy is being termed as digital economy. In this digital era with the disruptions caused by Corona Pandemic, historical bondage on the data flow and policy prospect cannot yield proper results. The time has come to think and act beyond digital.

Global corporations have been experiencing the CORONA-Trauma both on the fronts of resources and revenues, however, the options of human flowers to blossom beyond the physical understanding of the same, are strongly awaited. Corporate leaders have started playing a major role in not only maintaining the balance of the corporate world but also multiplying the scopes for a better living with a superior quality of life for individuals across the globe in the new era of business.
